Mixing old and new elements have always been a favorite choice for many interior and exterior professionals. The concept of “transitional design” or that perfect combination of modern amenities and vintage aesthetics has grown more popular over the recent years, influencing the way homeowners build their homes. One of the best rooms in your house to showcase this unique hodgepodge of concepts is, surprisingly, your bathroom.
Retro bathrooms are all the rage these days, marrying antique designs with modern architecture and achieving a balance between the two. You, too, can get started on your own vintage project. Here are a few ideas on how to remodel the throwback bathroom of your dreams.
Brass is back in vogue, not just for vintage bathrooms, but for retro kitchen renovation projects as well. Swap out your modern faucets and showerheads with brass or polished copper. You can take this even further by installing a two-faucet system for hot and cold water. Combine these vintage hardware with a matching sink or, perhaps, a skirted vanity to really make the design pop.
Uniform tiles may look good and clean, but if you want your bathroom to be a nod to the 1970s, you should use a checkerboard pattern instead. Multicolor tiles can sometimes make a design look too busy, drawing attention away from other elements in your bathroom. If you’re hesitant about using colored tiles in a checkerboard pattern, you can tone it down a notch by using black and white instead.
If you have the space for it, install a clawfoot tub. Nothing says vintage in bath and home remodeling more than a luxurious and elegant clawfoot tub serving as the focal point of your bathroom. You may face issues with spillage, as is true for many free-standing tubs, but this can easily be planned around so it doesn’t become a big deal.
