While it’s certainly possible to finish some home, kitchen or even bath remodeling projects during the winter, it’s much better to spend the season keeping your interiors and exteriors safe from the elements. For example, finding your deck damaged with water and ice on the first days of spring can be very frustrating. Most decks are built with wooden structures. Some of their more exposed parts are usually coated with a waterproof veneer, but the joists and piers are still mostly wood. This can make decks prone to freezing problems.
Thankfully, it is possible to protect your deck and its most vulnerable components against the harsh winter weather. Here are a few tips on how to properly “winterize” your deck.
Snow can fall in Missouri as early as October and as late as May. That’s why it’s important to call your deck contractors and start your seasonal maintenance early. Experts recommend scheduling an appointment with your contractor right after Thanksgiving. Call weeks ahead because this is a peak time for deck inspections and maintenance.
Sweep away any leaves, branches or dirt that may have ended up on your deck. Make sure you dispose of these properly. Don’t just sweep them into a corner. These debris can trap moisture when left outside and can cause rot. Make sure you keep your deck swept clean at least once every few days or as needed.
An empty deck might look bare from your patio or entry doors, but it’s a good habit to put away any potted plants or furniture before winter begins. Leaving them out can damage both the items and the deck. Store outdoor seating and tables in the basement or garage. Check your plants for pests first before moving them indoors.
