Windows serve as a barrier that protects your indoors from the elements. Not only that, but they also help maintain consistent indoor temperatures. Thus, it is important that they are kept shut during winter so your living spaces remain warm and cozy.
Of course, regular maintenance is imperative to ensure the seals around them are still intact and that air won’t seep through them. But these components can only do so much, and they may eventually fail at some point. Here’s what you need to know about this common window problem and the telltale signs to watch out for.
Modern windows are usually composed of two or three glass layers divided by a spacer material that’s either filled with air or an odorless and colorless inert gas. These glass panes are sealed at the edges to form an insulated glass unit (IGU). Through this construction, energy transfer slows, which means your home stays comfortable despite the extreme temperatures outside.
Even if your windows were correctly installed and have performed exceptionally for many years, the seals will eventually break down. When this happens, the inert gas leaks out while the moisture and outside air seeps in. The IGU is considered compromised since it can no longer effectively keep your indoors comfortable.
As soon as you notice any of these signs, be sure to get in touch with a local contractor for a potential replacement:
