As a rule of thumb, window contractors ensure that a window’s total glass area is between 20% to 30% of the total floor area. But for east- and south-facing windows, their size should not exceed 15% of the room’s floor area. The size of north-facing windows should be around 15% to 25% of the floor area, and west-facing windows should only be 10% of the total room floor area.
You need to find the right balance of thermal mass inside your residence to reduce energy costs and improve indoor comfort. Windows with more glass are generally OK for homes with higher thermal mass and large north-facing windows. But if your home has low thermal mass, it’s best to avoid windows with expansive glass.
