If you’re undergoing a kitchen renovation, you’ll want to seriously consider concrete countertops. Rock-solid and hard as granite or slate, concrete can be a better fit in contemporary kitchen designs.
Durability vs. Maintenance
There’s no doubt concrete is very durable. Concrete countertops will last you a lifetime if well-sealed and maintained. On that note, concrete countertops need consistent upkeep. You’ll need to keep applying sealer and wax to protect the surface of your counters and avoid stains. You have to clean spills and messes right away. So, while durability is a pro, maintenance may be a con.
Customization vs. Price
Concrete countertops are very customizable. They fit most configurations, and you can get the exact color, edge profile and sheen you want. Finishes can include marbling and veining, and dish draining ridges. You can choose decorative add-ins, such as stones, colored glass or metal shavings. Being handcrafted, they involve a lot of labor so the high price is a disadvantage. Still, this material can increase your home’s value.
Installation Considerations
Your base cabinets must be sturdy enough to support the weight of a concrete slab. If you choose to have concrete countertops poured in place, you’ll have to deal with a mess. To avoid such a mess, you can get precast countertops transported to your home. Long or thick countertops, though, will be heavy and awkward to move.
Other Options Worth Checking
If you feel the cons outweigh the pros, checkout our non-concrete options. Ask your contractor about granite countertops. Yes, they are expensive, but also beautiful and unique and quite hard to damage. It’s natural stone and has a certain quality that’s hard to resist.
