Remodeling your kitchen is a tricky business, but trying to coordinate your kitchen lighting can be even more difficult, especially if this is your first time to do so. Sure, you can ask your home remodeler for their input, but the final decision is on your shoulders. Fortunately, while coordinating your kitchen lighting is difficult, it’s not impossible.
In this post, STL Design and Build discusses the most effective ways you can coordinate your kitchen lighting.
Three Lighting Layers
When choosing your kitchen lighting, base them on three layers of lighting: ambient, task and accent. Ambient is the overhead light that allows you to navigate your kitchen with ease. Task lighting is used to illuminate your work areas, such as countertops and sinks, while accent lighting highlights the architectural features of your kitchen. Using this layered approach can bring the right level of lighting to your kitchen and further minimize shadows.
Positioning
Inform your home remodeling contractors to position these fixtures based on their functions and type. Ambient lights should be able to evenly light the kitchen while task lightings should be able to cast light on your work surface. One example of this is by placing pendant lights directly above the sink or chopping stations. Accent lighting, on the other hand, should be able to highlight the details you want people to see such as cove lights on ceiling ledges.
The Right Bulbs
To get the ideal color temperature in your kitchen, it’s vital that you choose the right type of bulbs. Ambient and task lights should be lit with a neutral white light, which is often achieved if the bulb has a color temperature of 3,500 kilowatt-hour to 4,100 kilowatt-hour . That way, your floors and work surfaces are adequately lit. Accent lights, meanwhile, can either have a temperature of 2,700 kilowatt-hour to 3,000 kilowatt-hour to showcase pieces in a warmer light. For architectural details, the accent light should be at a temperature of 3,500 kilowatt-hour to 4,100 kilowatt-hour .
Natural Light Sources
Since you’re remodeling your kitchen anyway, consider using natural sources of illumination, such as skylights or windows. That way, the kitchen will gain extra warmth and fill lighting gaps from your fixtures. Porthole windows or a glass pane to your door are only two examples of natural light sources for your kitchen.
Light Housing
Should you decide to use LED strips as a lighting source, it can cast a beam of light onto your glossy kitchen surfaces. Unfortunately, this glare can be quite distracting even from a few feet away. Avoid this by placing the LED strips inside light housings.
