Choosing the right material is always a consideration when planning a bathroom remodel. With plenty of options available, your choice would depend on your specific needs and budget. Acrylic is one such material. Popular within the remodeling sphere, it is commonly used for shower enclosures, particularly for the base and panels.
But there are pros and cons of using acrylic as an integral material for shower design.
The Pros
One notable feature of acrylic is that it is much lighter than marble or other solid stone tiles. This makes it easy to install and maneuver around even in tight spaces during a bath remodel. A non-porous material, it provides reliable waterproofing, which means your shower can impede mold and mildew growth, and it lowers the chances of water damage in your home.
Once installed, an acrylic shower is easy to clean and maintain. In fact, a soapy water mixture is enough to keep it shiny. Unlike stone materials, acrylic shower wall panels don’t need regular sealing. Even when wet, the shower is still warm to the touch and doesn’t induce slips and falls. Durable and long-lasting, it can withstand scratches better than fiberglass.
The Cons
Even with these advantages, the acrylic material also has its disadvantages. For one, it is not a good option if you want a custom-made shower area. Certain units of the shower base are made in standard sizes and configurations, which mean drain locations are preset. This may require you to move your existing plumbing.
Another disadvantage of acrylic is that it is not as desirable as a shower enclosure made primarily of tiles. Various styles are available, however, though they are more limited than the options available with tile, where almost any design is possible.
