Bathrooms may have a relatively small footprint compared to the rest of the house, yet bathroom remodeling is one of the most complicated home improvement projects a homeowner can undertake. This means you have to have a solid plan before you commit to it.
A well-planned bathroom remodeling project is less likely to run into problems with a budget. Keep the following in mind when planning your bathroom remodeling project:
Cover the basics first – Before you consider color palettes and finishes, make sure that your budget covers the basic parts of your bathroom, such as plumbing and fixtures. If you are relocating major fixtures like the toilet or the bathtub, changes will need to be made to the plumbing, which will incur additional costs. If it comes down to a choice between the two, you’ll want a plain but functional bathroom over a beautiful but not-as-functional one.
Have an emergency budget – It’s not uncommon for remodelers to find issues that require repair after the bath remodeling project has already started. It could be the bathroom is too old and has outdated plumbing, or, maybe, there’s moisture damage in the drywall. These problems are not included in the quoted cost and will, therefore, incur additional costs. An “emergency” budget that’s about 10% to 20% of your renovation budget is usually enough to cover such repairs.
A good bathroom design should strike a good balance between form and function. The flooring, specifically, should be aesthetically appealing, yet should also be durable and slip resistant. Since bathrooms typically have high humidity levels, the cabinetry should be made with materials that can resist constant exposure to moisture. When planning your project, don’t just choose materials for cost or aesthetics – always compare their pros and cons before making your choice.
