Many homeowners make decisions on what type of bathroom flooring they want based on looks. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s equally important to take other factors into consideration as well. Aside from appearances, you should also look at a material’s functionality. Bathrooms are high-humidity areas that see plenty of water use so choosing a floor that’s resistant to constant exposure to these conditions should be a given.
What other factors should you include when deciding on a bathroom floor? Material is extremely important.
Ceramic Tiles
Just as oak is a classic and dependable material for entry doors, so is ceramic for bathroom floors. Ceramic is a non-porous water-resistant material that holds well against the humid environment of a bathrooms and kitchens. Its biggest drawback, however, is that it is a cold material, particularly in the fall and winter seasons. There are heated options to help get around this common issue.
Vinyl
Vinyl is a good middle-ground for affordability and durability. Sheet vinyl floors are waterproof and even ideal for children’s bathrooms and laundry rooms. They are usually available in big enough sheets that you’ll see minimal seams when they are installed. You can also use vinyl planks to add some visual interest to your floor.
Stone
Nothing beats the beauty of natural stone as a bathroom floor material. These floors are strong and can easily last for generations, adding more value to your home. They are, however, heavy and require experienced bathroom contractors to install them properly, which is one of the reasons they can also be a little on the expensive side.
